The LSE is part of the London Stock Exchange Group and is the most international exchange in the world. The LSE currently has around 2,000 issuers, over one third of which are international, and operates in over 100 countries.
In 1997, the LSE welcomed the first Chinese company, Datang International Power Generation Company Limited, to list on the exchange. Since then, Chinese companies have raised a total of nearly $14 billion on the LSE. In 2019, the Shanghai-London Stock Connect was successfully launched, enabling Chinese companies listed on the SSE to raise funds and trade on the LSE as well. Similarly, UK-listed companies can also be listed and traded on the SSE. Through the Shanghai-London Stock Connect, four Chinese companies - Huatai Securities, China Pacific Insurance, Cheung Kong Power and Guotou Power - have raised a total of US$5.37 billion in the London market and have traded for more than US$1.1 billion since their listing.
At the same time, Chinese issuers and global issuers of Chinese related securities are actively participating in ETP (exchange traded products) trading. There are more than 20 ETP products on the LSE with Chinese securities as underlying. In addition, Chinese investors can choose from over 1,600 ETP products on the LSE as a way to invest in developed and emerging economies and a wide range of asset classes.
Since LSE welcomed its first Chinese member firm CICC in 2011, now there are 14 Chinese members. These Chinese brokerages have become an important part of the global community of investment banks and brokerages. Two of these Chinese brokerages have become members of Turquoise, this European trading platform includes 4,500 stocks from 19 European countries.
