Singaporean policy specialist Kishore Mahbubani: GBA's flourishing development presents opportunities for Hengqin
To celebrate the 23rd Anniversary Celebrations of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST), Kishore Mahbubani, Distinguished Fellow at the Asia Research Institute of the National University of Singapore visited Hengqin on March 28.
In his opinion, the flourishing development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area will create great opportunities for the Guangdong-Macao In-depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
“The Greater Bay Area is one of the most dynamic economic regions in China and the world.” Mr. Mahbubani recalled that he had visited Hong Kong for the first time in 1975, and all he saw near the border between Hong Kong and Shenzhen was farmland. “Now, the area has grown faster economically than any other economic region in human history. That's a phenomenal success story.”
Mr. Mahbubani also visited the exhibition hall of the cooperation zone during his trip to Hengqin. Talking about the cooperation zone's development pattern, Mr. Mahbubani considered the zone's livelihood projects created for Macao residents to work and live in Hengqin as “innovative”, and hoped that they could serve as successful models for the integrated development of the Greater Bay Area in the future.
Mr. Mahbubani also spoke highly of the Zhuhai MUST Science and Technology Research Institute. He believes that such a scientific and innovative platform attaches equal importance to teaching and research, benefiting academic research and industrial development.
Kishore Mahbubani is a Singaporean diplomat and geopolitical consultant who served as Singapore's Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1984 and 1989, again between 1998 and 2004, and as President of the United Nations Security Council between 2001 and 2002. He served as founding dean at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy of the National University of Singapore (NUS) from 2004 until the end of 2017.
