Pohjola Insurance: The amount of claims paid under personal insurance increased throughout Finland in the first half of 2023 – health insurance services were in particularly active use
In January–June 2023, Pohjola Insurance paid the highest amount of claims in the last four years as the return to normal from the coronavirus pandemic is reflected in an increase in the amount of loss events. The insurance company's total claims paid in January–June reached 527 million euros, which represents an increase of two per cent compared to last year.
"Finns were particularly active with their health insurance during the first half of the year. After the years of the coronavirus pandemic, the population's resistance to infection is lower, and diseases have new ways of spreading. Furthermore, people now seek out treatment more actively than they did before the pandemic, and they are now more likely to immediately contact private healthcare," says Sari Styrman, Pohjola Insurance's Director, Claims Settlement.
Overall, the claims paid under personal insurance increased throughout Finland in every region. For health insurance, the amount of claims paid in January–June increased by as much as 34 per cent compared to last year, and by 69 per cent compared to the corresponding period in 2021.
"Health insurance sales increased during the first half of the year throughout the country by 20 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year. The growth in the insurance portfolio also shows that people want to ensure that they and they loved ones have access to healthcare services when they need them," says Styrman.
The number of Finnish travellers was also very high in January–June 2023, despite the inflation rate. Pohjola Insurance's national statistics show that the number of travel losses increased by 48 per cent compared to January–June last year.
"People still want to travel, despite the reduced purchasing power of households. Based on the number of losses, we would estimate that Finns are once again travelling normally," says Styrman.
Conversely, the amount of claims paid based on major losses decreased compared to the record amounts in 2022. In the first half of the year, there were fewer losses of more than 300,000 euros in value than there were in the corresponding period last year.
