EVOLUTION OF CREDIT INSTITUTIONS' BALANCE SHEET
The Banque centrale du Luxembourg informs that, based on preliminary data, the aggregated balance sheet of credit institutions reached 936 482 million euros on 30 November 2023, compared to 941 319 million euros on 31 October 2023, a decrease of 0.5%. On the asset side this decrease is mainly due to the monthly decrease of loans to other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On the liabilities side, it is due to the decrease in deposits from other banks and deposit-taking corporations. On an annual basis, the aggregated balance sheet decreased by 6.4%.
Net interbank lending, i.e. the difference between interbank loans and deposits, increased by 10 477 million euros (5.0%) to reach 221 410 million euros at the end of November 2023.
Loans to resident non-bank customers increased by 1 003 million euros, or 0.9%, between October 2023 and November 2023. Over twelve months, these loans decreased by 4 455 million euros (3.8%).
On a yearly basis, loans to non-financial corporations (NFCs) decreased by 1 243 million euros (4.3%), loans for house purchases decreased by 441 million euros (1.1%) and loans to other financial intermediaries (OFIs) decreased by 2 271 million euros (5.9%).
With regard to the liability side, deposits from the resident non-bank sector increased by 8 055 million euros or 2.95% between October 2023 and November 2023. Over twelve months, these deposits decreased by 43 811 million euros, or 13.5%.
Between November 2022 and November 2023, Other financial intermediaries (OFI) deposits (which had a share of 66.7% as at 30 November 2023 and comprised deposits made up by monetary and non-monetary investment funds) decreased by 40 523 million euros (17.8%) and household deposits increased by 1 306 million euros (2.9%). NFC deposits decreased by 1 912 million euros (7.4%) and deposits from the other sectors[1] also decreased by 2 682 million euros (10.5%).
