ASEAN-China GBA Forum 2024: Building Global Partnerships
On November 13, nearly 300 diplomats, government officials, and business leaders from 10 ASEAN countries gathered at the Qianhai International Convention Center for the 2024 ASEAN-China GBA Economic Cooperation (Qianhai) Forum. Themed "Technological Leadership, Industrial Synergy," the forum focused on exploring development opportunities and strengthening economic ties between the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) and ASEAN.
Lee Kian-yan, President of Malaysia's Smuzcity Berhad, announced a cooperation deal with Qianhai to launch a cross-border e-commerce industrial park, emphasizing Qianhai's ideal location for fostering partnerships. “We hope to see more companies from Shenzhen and other GBA cities expanding into Malaysia and beyond,” Lee said.
The forum also showcased initiatives aimed at enhancing collaboration. Bai Xue, Executive Head of the Shenzhen Industry-University-Research Institute Collaboration Association, highlighted government incentives and industrial policies that support ASEAN's integration with the GBA. Parallel subforums discussed topics such as digital transformation and cross-border e-commerce.
Anita Kuang, Executive Secretary-General of the GBA Importers and Exporters Association, revealed plans to establish e-commerce bases in ASEAN markets to aid GBA enterprises' growth. "We aim to nurture local talent and create new business models in ASEAN," Kuang explained.
The event culminated in a reception with over 800 Chinese companies, facilitating the signing of cooperation agreements worth 12.1 billion yuan (US$1.68 billion) in 2023. The 2024 forum further strengthened the economic partnership between ASEAN and the GBA, setting the stage for more international collaboration and innovation.
