China is pushing to become a global leader in green technology by accelerating the development of its environmental protection equipment manufacturing sector. A new set of comprehensive guidelines issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, and the State Administration for Market Regulation aims to boost the sector's competitiveness through technological innovation and industry ecosystem optimization.
Key Milestones and Objectives
The guidelines set ambitious targets for 2027 and 2030. By 2027, China aims to significantly expand the market share of advanced environmental technologies and address key gaps in the industrial chain. By 2030, the goal is to achieve full technological self-reliance and solidify China's leadership in green and circular solutions.
The industry has seen steady growth, with an annual compound growth rate of nearly 6% since 2016, reaching an output value of 920 billion yuan (approximately 128.32 billion USD) in 2024. However, the sector still faces challenges, including low-end product homogeneity and limited adoption of high-end technologies compared to developed nations.
Innovation and Industry Upgrades
To address these issues, the government plans a three-year campaign to enhance key environmental technologies. This will involve integrating advanced digital solutions such as 5G and AI into pollution treatment and environmental monitoring. The initiative also includes establishing innovation centers led by industry leaders and research institutions to promote collaboration and technological breakthroughs.
Ren Hongqiang, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, emphasized that building specialized innovation hubs is crucial to forming a comprehensive innovation chain. These centers will focus on reducing the risks of technology commercialization and accelerating the development of advanced equipment.
Market-Driven Development
To improve adoption rates of advanced equipment, the guidelines advocate for a user-driven procurement evaluation system. Wang Yining, Honorary President of the China Environmental Protection Machinery Industry Association, noted that the initiative seeks to overcome the structural imbalance of "low-end surplus and high-end scarcity." By promoting a value-based purchasing mechanism that evaluates performance, efficiency, and durability, the government aims to encourage widespread use of high-quality environmental technologies.
