Hengqin and Macao pioneer new model for global trade with digital innovation
The Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin is emerging as a new frontier for global trade, leveraging digital innovation and cross-border collaboration to create a unique ecosystem for cross-border e-commerce. By integrating advanced technologies such as AI and big data with innovative policies and strategic location advantages, the zone is redefining how products are sourced, marketed, and sold globally.
Digital innovation drives global trade
In the Hengqin Cross-Border E-commerce (Huafa) Innovation Park, companies like Datastory and Yowant Technology are leading the charge in creating a new paradigm for global trade.
Using AI and big data, companies are building platforms that enable immersive shopping experiences for global consumers. For example, digital avatars can now model clothing in virtual environments, showcasing products in front of famous landmarks to provide an immersive experience for buyers worldwide.
At Yowant X27 S Hengqin Base, multilingual live-streaming hosts promote products ranging from Portuguese wines to Chinese kitchenware, creating a digital trade ecosystem that feels like a "global marketplace". Yowant Technology, a leading e-commerce company, has positioned itself as a technology-driven new consumption service platform, focusing on live-streaming e-commerce, overseas expansion, and AI applications.
Policy and infrastructure support for e-commerce
Hengqin's unique policy environment is a key driver behind this innovation. The cooperation zone offers a range of incentives, including a 15% tax preferential policy and data cross-border flow pilots, which enhance cross-border efficiency and support international supply chain management. These policies are complemented by infrastructure advantages such as proximity to major ports and airports, making Hengqin an ideal base for e-commerce companies.
"Hengqin is a 'policy highland' for cross-border e-commerce companies," said Wang Wenhui, Co-President of Yowant Technology. "The zone's policies significantly boost cross-border efficiency, while tax incentives and data flow pilots provide additional support for international business expansion."
Building a global e-commerce ecosystem
The Hengqin Cross-Border E-commerce (Huafa) Innovation Park has already attracted over 70 companies, including Shein, Kuaishou, and Vipin, forming a comprehensive e-commerce ecosystem. The park aims to become a leading demonstration zone for cross-border e-commerce, integrating services and ecosystem partners.
In 2024, Datastory launched the Global Selection platform, integrating data from major e-commerce platforms like TikTok and Amazon to provide intelligent product selection and marketing insights for Chinese companies. The company's Vice President, Tang Xinmin, highlighted the importance of data-driven decision-making in modern trade.
"Previously, product selection relied on intuition; now, it relies on data," Tang said. "Our platform uses AI and big data to analyze market trends, marketing effectiveness, and competitive landscapes, helping sellers make more informed decisions."
Macao-Hengqin collaboration for global market expansion
The cooperation between Hengqin and Macao is also driving market expansion. Yowant Technology is leveraging Hengqin's strategic location to innovate a "cross-border live-streaming + duty-free direct delivery" model, promoting Macao's specialty products through live-streaming and supply chain integration. This model not only enhances Macao's economic diversity but also supports the expansion of Chinese brands into Southeast Asia and beyond.
"Hengqin and Macao together can create a powerful platform for global trade," said Tang. "By combining Macao's international resources with Hengqin's policy advantages, we can build a digital trade hub that connects Chinese manufacturers with global consumers."
Looking ahead, Hengqin aims to become a global hub for digital trade, leveraging its unique advantages to support the expansion of Chinese companies into international markets. The cooperation zone is also focusing on talent development, collaborating with universities in Macao to create specialized programs for cross-border e-commerce.
