Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (SMBC) announced the release of the Asia Transition Finance (ATF) Annual Report 2025on October 16, 2025, as part of its participation in the Asia Transition Finance Study Group (ATF Study Group), a private-sector initiative launched to accelerate the region's decarbonization efforts.
The ATF Study Group—comprising leading banks active across Asia—focuses on developing practical frameworks to support a “just and orderly transition” toward net-zero emissions. Its work complements existing international standards and taxonomies by identifying operational solutions and financial tools tailored to Asia’s unique economic structures.
The 2025 report examines transition-enabling sectors such as Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), distributed energy networks, and mechanisms including carbon pricingand voluntary carbon markets, all viewed as high-potential areas in Southeast Asia. It also provides country-level insights into energy transition strategies in Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand, and highlights the distinctive role of Islamic financein supporting transition projects in Muslim-majority markets.
Going forward, SMBC and the ATF Study Group plan to deepen cooperation with public authorities and industry participants, sharing institutional experience on the design of transition finance instruments and on integrating national taxonomies with global sustainability frameworks.
