Luxembourg keeps slot as top EU green finance hub
Luxembourg remained the highest ranked financial centre for green finance in the EU--and took the 7th spot overall--in a twice-yearly international assessment.
The grand duchy ranked 7th out of 96 financial centres in the Global Green Finance Index published on 23 April 2024. Luxembourg was 5th in the two previous editions, released in October 2023 and April 2023.
Five western European financial centres featured in the latest global top 10, with 3 other positions taken by US cities. Singapore rounded out the top 10. London topped the table, followed by Geneva and Zurich. Luxembourg had the highest score among EU countries.
The GGFI is produced by Z/Yen Partners, a “commercial thinktank” backed by the City of London and the China Development Institute, an official thinktank in Shenzhen. Luxembourg for Finance, an economic promotion agency, is a member of its “Vantage Financial Centres” network. “The GGFI provides ratings of the green finance offerings of financial centres,” the outfit stated.
Z/Yen said the index was compiled using a combination of 129 quantitative measures--such as data from consulting firms, the Economist Intelligence Unit, OECD, UN and World Bank--and an online survey of 773 financial sector professionals globally over the trailing 24 months.
The grand duchy placed in the global top 10 of several of the ranking’s subindices. Luxembourg ranked 1st in human capital, 2nd in business and 5th in sustainability.
Luxembourg was rated 17th globally and 6th in Europe in Z/Yen Partner’s overall Global Financial Centres Index published in March 2024.
