Mizuho FG Publishes “Avoided Emissions Focus Report 2025”
Mizuho Financial Group, Inc., together with six group companies including Mizuho Bank, Ltd., today released the “Mizuho Avoided Emissions Focus Report 2025 – Toward a Sustainable Future through Avoided Emissions.”
The report centers on “avoided emissions” – a metric that quantifies how a company's products or services help reduce greenhouse gas emissions on the user side. This concept is gaining traction globally as a tool to assess corporate climate contributions, particularly in sustainable finance and investment decision-making.
Key highlights from the report include:
Global trends: International standards and guidance on avoided emissions are evolving, with new sector-specific frameworks under development.
Corporate disclosure: In Japan, 180 companies disclosed avoided emissions in FY2024, signaling growing adoption.
Financial sector role: The report emphasizes the applicability of avoided emissions in sustainable finance, particularly from a banking and securities perspective.
Mizuho's initiatives: The group has developed a structured approach to support clients from pre-assessment to financing, including the launch of a new financial product, “Mizuho Avoided Emissions Impact Finance,” in October 2025.
Mizuho aims to leverage avoided emissions as a key indicator to evaluate client climate opportunities and support their decarbonization journeys.
